National Zipper Day: Est. in 1893 by Whitcomb Judson

Happy National Zipper Day! Did you know the first zipper-like device called the “clasp-locker” was invented by Chicago native Whitcomb Judson in 1893? The device was later improved upon by Swedish-American engineer Gideon Sundbach who officially coined the term ‘zipper’. 

“The invention … may be applied, as for example, to mail bags, belts, and the closing of seams uniting flexible bodies.”
