Volunteer Emergency Workers are eligible to receive a $500 tax credit if they apply! Our first responders are the backbone of community safety. Illinois is still in need of volunteer first responders and this tax credit was passed through the General Assembly to support our firefighters and emergency workers. The $500 non-refundable credit can be used to lower your income tax liability beginning on or after January 1, 2023, and beginning prior to January 1, 2028. Do you qualify for the $500 tax credit?
-Requirements for the Volunteer Emergency Worker $500 Tax Credit-
- have served as a volunteer emergency worker for at least 9 months during the taxable year.
- have not received compensation for your services as a volunteer emergency worker of more than $5,000 for the taxable year.
- be included on the list provided by your local fire department, district, or office, to the OSFM by January 12, confirming you met the previous two qualifications.
- submit a complete online application with IDOR on the date listed above.
- be one of the first 10,000 qualified applicants.
